Gergő Szinyova
, under the title:
Imaginary Viaduct
. The exhibition focuses on the always significant aesthetic and theoretical questions of temporality, duplicity, and uniqueness. (photo: Facebook event)
Szinyova
’s latest 2016 series builds on a colorful and abstract watercolor. He created black and white variants of this watercolor, then reduced the picture to a sketchy drawing, and repeated its main motifs on three large canvasses. By recreating the same motifs many times,
Szinyova
explores the aesthetic nature of information distortion and information loss from different technical perspectives.
Szinyova
was born in 1986; for him, Hungarian artistic albums containing the often poor quality black and white reproductions of the ‘60s, ‘70s and ‘80s are now only historical curiosities, raw materials carrying the same general visual morals as industrial labels on the wrapping of mass products.
He evokes the melancholic times of technical reproduction (Walter Benjamin) by creating reproductions with the help of industrial tools: he reproduced the hand-drawn motifs with a graphic software, then he burned the vector graphics into another paper with an industrial laser by only slightly changing the composition, analyzing perception and aesthetical judgement in “laboratory conditions”.
