Having successfully recovered from his creative, health, and financial crisis, the composer's masterpiece reflects on his renewed energy regarding the great sage ruler, King Solomon, David's son.
The oratorio is divided into three acts. The first one shows the king and queen's (the Pharaoh's daughter) happy marriage including one of its famous components, the act-closing nightingale chorus. The story of the wise ruler and the two women makes up the subject of the second act: the judgment trio draws the three different personalities and the painful prayer of the real mother. The orchestral introduction of the third act – the entry of the Queen of Sheba – may well be the best-known part of the whole oratorio.
