Munk
was originally created as a duo by
Mathias Modica and Jonas Imbery
, the two founders of German record label
Gomma
, established in 1999. However, Imbery left the group after their 2008 album called Cloudbuster was finished, and has recently been producing noteworthy and sophisticated house under the pseudonym Telonius.
The music of Munk has also undergone fundamental change over the decade-long existence of the project. The early releases of Gomma (and of course the first EPs and maxis of Munk that started coming out in 2000) have memorable abstract funk sounds mixed with contemporary forward-looking, trendy and hard electro and house - the carefully elaborated, prehistoric disco base broke through the beat on the surface from time to time. The Munk albums of the new decade are somewhat different:
The Bird And The Beat
, produced in 2011 by Modica alone, features lots of vocals. You could say that the 4/4 beat is the same, but the sound has been further refined.
Chanson 3000
, the latest record released a mere few weeks ago, has dynamic, sensual and highly enjoyable material: it is full of many hit-worthy tracks, which are based on vocal-heavy, twisted disco and smartly manipulated house.
