On April 8 – for the last time in the 2014/2015 season –
Zeneház
and the
Concerto Budapest
orchestra have another
Brahms
concert in store. For this occasion
Gábor Csalog
, the artistic director of the series, has selected works by
Brahms
and
Gubaidulina
.
Born in 1931,
Sofia Gubaidulina
is one of the
most significant
composers alive today, who is not only known for her compositions, but also for her piano playing. Her uncompromisingly characteristic style was heavily criticized from the beginning, which prompted her to live and work as a freelance musician in Moscow. As she made her living primarily by composing music for foreign films, she was more popular abroad than in her own country for a long time.

Her entire oeuvre has been influenced by her intensive curiosity about non-traditional sounds and lesser-known instruments, among them the Russian folk accordion called
bayan
. The very first piece she wrote for this instrument – the opening piece of the evening, De profundis – represents a truly unique, experimental world of sound. The other two works featured at this concert are Quasi Hoquetus, written in the mid-1980s for piano, viola and bassoon, and
Silenzio
, written for bayan, violin and cello.
