Roger Ballen's documentary and staged images occupy a unique place in contemporary photography. The photographer, born in the United States in 1950 and living in Johannesburg for more than 40 years, deals with topics such as loss of control, chaos, madness, alienation, man's relationship with the animal world, the inevitability of death, and – again and again – the experience of otherness. He characterises his own works as existential psychodramas, which penetrate the unconscious and reveal the essence of human existence. These special compositions can still be seen at the Mai Manó House until 19 August.
