Curator and artist Oksana Devochkina opens her latest exhibition of architectural abstractions on Friday, 8 November at 7pm.The exhibition features the work of Devochkina, alongside 13 of her students, following a month-long painting course. The course studied the skyline of Budapest, and reduced the depictions of the city “into squares and rectangles," the pure forms of the buildings.

The theme is a familiar one to Devochkina. When she first moved to Budapest, she negotiated the rent for her studio into paintings for her landlord. “They wanted something dedicated to the roofs of Budapest,” Devochkina explains, “and at first I didn’t like it, but as I started making sketches, I enjoyed the process”.

Under Devochkina’s guidance, the artists sketched elements of the city, capturing the rhythm and mood of Budapest. The exhibition features “overlapping rectangles of firewalls, numerous triangles of roofs, subtle or intense gradients of walls, art-deco curves and pure Bauhaus cubes”. The participating artists are international, hailing from Russia, Slovakia, Brazil, Greece, the USA and Hungary.

Devochkina’s classes run at weekends, and feature a new theme each month. Next month’s theme will be Hungarian architecture, and will include buildings outside Budapest.

Opening the gallery will be a special musical set, performed by composer and sound artist Alexey Zelensky, and dedicated to the memory of 20th-century designer and artist, László Moholy-Nagy.

The exhibition will run until the 15th. More information can be found on the event’s Facebook page
