The hotel behind the velvet curtain
Housed in the historic Adria Palace, built at the turn of the 20th century, Al Habtoor Palace Budapest combines old-world elegance with Middle-Eastern luxury. The five-star hotel features 170 rooms and 29 suites, many overlooking St Stephen’s Basilica or Erzsébet Square. Alongside Velvet, guests will find the Ottimo Italian Restaurant and the Kupola Lounge, plus the Silk Spa with its naturally lit indoor pool and full fitness studio. Mornings at Velvet are all about elegant café culture. Think speciality coffee, fragrant teas, and delicate desserts – from pastel macarons to a rotating Art of Cake Trio. Light bites such as beef sliders, foie gras salted caramel bonbons, and salmon tartare add a savoury edge, perfect for brunches, business chats, or a mid-afternoon treat.
When day turns to night
As the sun sets, the chandeliers dim and Velvet’s mood deepens. The music picks up – sometimes live jazz, sometimes smooth DJ sets – and the spotlight turns to the bar’s impressive vermouth collection. Bottles from Italy, France, and Spain shine across the counter, ready to be poured neat or mixed into signature creations.
Highlights include the Velvet, a bold mix of Red Riserva Vermouth and Cherry Pálinka, and Adria, a sparkling blend of sloe gin, rosso vermouth, blackberry, and prosecco. The Palace nods to its setting with port, vermouth, and elderflower, while the Bee keeps things light with Tanqueray 0% and honey – a refreshing, alcohol-free option.
A new chapter for the palace
Set in the reimagined former Kupola Bar, Velvet Bar & Café is the first signature venue to debut since Al Habtoor Palace Budapest opened earlier this year. For General Manager Rahim Abu Omar, it marks the start of a wider transformation:
