For an epic way to see Budapest, hop on a river cruise – preferably at night, when the city’s most stunning sights light up the Danube. And on 27 April, you’ll have a rare chance to do it for free. That’s when local boat operators kick off the season with Kirajzás ('Sailing Out'), a one-of-a-kind event where nearly 30 passenger boats leave the docks and glide down the river in formation.

Catching a river cruise in Budapest is simply a must. Trust us –it's the most impressive way to see the city, with stunning landmarks – think Parliament, Buda Castle, Fisherman's Bastion, and the iconic bridges – lining the Danube. If that sounds like a plan, mark 27 April in your calendar, because a special event is coming: Kirajzás (Sailing Out). Starting at 10 am, every passenger boat in the city will welcome visitors and set sail – and yes, it's completely free to join. The event also marks 205 years of passenger boating in Budapest, celebrating the city's rich river heritage.

Just one catch: spots are limited due to boat capacity, so you'll need to grab a free ticket (2 max) in advance. The website's in Hungarian – but hey, that really shouldn't stop you in the age of AI. Some slots are already full, others haven't opened yet, so keep an eye on things here.
