Dóri Tomcsányi is a Hungarian designer known for bringing vibrant, playful prints and nostalgic themes to life through fabric. If you're on the lookout for unique, locally inspired pieces – whether as a gift or a souvenir – be sure to keep an eye on her work, including her latest collection.

The brand: TOMCSANYI

A Budapest-based slow-fashion womenswear brand with handcrafted pieces, minimalist, modern cuts and one-of-a-kind, hand-drawn prints. What we love about TOMCSANYI is how she draws on national identity and cultural heritage when creating a new collection. It means her pieces double as perfect mementos of a Hungarian holiday – if fashion is your kind of souvenir. This season, her inspiration comes from the Great Hungarian Plain (the Alföld in Hungarian) and the legendary world of the csikós horsemen.

The Great Hungarian Plain

Just to give you an idea: the Alföld is a vast, flat region stretching across eastern Hungary – picture endless open fields, golden grasslands, and a wide sky. This is where folk tales were born, rural life still echoes, and age-old customs continue to live on. One of its most iconic figures is the csikós – a traditional Hungarian horseman or herdsman – cowboys of the Hungarian plains. Dressed in wide-brimmed hats and flowing blue garments, they are masters of horse riding and animal herding. They're also known for their horse shows and snapping their karikás ostor (a special whip) with precision and flair.

New collection

And this is the land that inspired Dóri Tomcsányi. It didn’t just influence her aesthetically – it’s personal. As a child, she spent many summer weekends at trade union resorts on the Alföld, where csikós shows were a regular feature. The crack of the whip and the sight of the dusty plain’s endless horizon shimmering in the summer heat left a lasting imprint on her memory. These childhood experiences are something she continues to return to, and they quietly echo through every TOMCSANYI collection – in hand-drawn prints, later reborn in garments that feel both unique and sensitively crafted.

TOMCSANYI's Spring/Summer 2025 collection not only celebrates the beauty and heritage of the pastoral culture of the Great Hungarian Plain, but also serves as a deeply personal and intimate journey. Elements of traditional csikós attire – wide-brimmed hats, loose shirts, and trousers (the classic gatya look) – are reimagined with modern tailoring, contemporary silhouettes, and subtly stylised patterns.

One of the standout pieces in the collection, the Gulyás Blouse, draws directly from this heritage. With its puffed sleeves, it breathes new life into the bold details of folk costume, transforming them into modern, wearable fashion. The playful use of the karikás ostor (traditional whip) motif adds a whimsical touch, grounding the collection in tradition while keeping it fresh and forward-looking.

Fashion Meant to Be Inherited

Staying true to its commitment to natural materials, the brand's latest collection is crafted from organic cotton poplin and viscose. The cuts ensure comfort, while a clean, minimalist tailoring approach is paired with functional design elements.

The result is a collection that feels both modern and timeless –pieces designed to remain staples in your wardrobe for years to come. And if cared for with love, they can even be passed down, becoming treasured heirlooms of style and memory.
