Picture a gorgeously restored 1890s villa, just steps from the iconic Heroes' Square, buzzing with new energy. Last year, this historic gem transformed into Hősök Bistro – a restaurant serving up hearty Hungarian flavours. Here, both tourists and locals get a warm welcome, top-tier hospitality, and the best of Hungarian cuisine.

Top-notch location

You couldn't ask for a better location – this area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with Andrássy Avenue and Heroes' Square only steps away. Peek out of the window, or grab a seat on the terrace in the summer, and you'll spot several iconic landmarks: beyond Heroes' Square, there's the Zoo, the Museum of Fine Arts, Kunsthalle, the Museum of Ethnography, and City Park – complete with its signature red-and-white striped hot air balloon. Even the Millenium Underground is just a stone's throw away.

City Park is the perfect place to spend the day, whether exploring exhibitions, visiting the majestic Elephant House, taking a brisk walk through the greenery, feeding ducks by the lake, soaking in the thermal water of Széchenyi Baths, or catching a concert at the House of Music Hungary. And with so much to do, you're bound to work up an appetite. That’s where Hősök Bistro comes in – swing by for a hearty lunch or settle in for a wine-paired dinner within its historic walls.

Warm hospitality, fresh ideas

Hősök Bistro runs on pure professionalism – you can feel it in every detail. Owners Béla Gátfalvi and Csaba Ludmán were born for this industry, with 22 years of hospitality experience under their belts. This restaurant is the pinnacle of their career. And the team? Young, passionate, and highly skilled, with the bistro’s culinary vision expertly guided by a rising-star protégé.

Modern Hungarian cuisine

If you're curious about traditional flavours, and don't mind a modern twist, you'll love the culinary concept here. Seasonality is key, ensuring only the freshest ingredients make it onto the plate. The menu blends big favourites and revived classics, all presented in their own style – on trend, yet always respectful of the original recipes.

The winter menu is nothing short of mouthwatering: a rich greenpea stew with marinated quail egg and roasted beets, Hortobágyi pancake reinvented as ravioli with juicy free-range chicken thigh and a velvety paprika sauce. And don't miss out on thegoose liver brülée with chamomile jelly, plum gel and homemade fruitbread.

The grey cattle goulash is an absolute must-try. But if you're after something lighter, the seasonal vegetable cream soup – made with Jerusalem artichoke – is a great pick too.

Another big classic, Cordon Bleu, is also featured on the menu and is made of premium ingredients. If you like fish, local-favourite catfish paprikash served with curd noodles, will be a flavoursome meal. If you'd try something a little bolder, go for the wild boar, paired with bread dumplings. For dessert, save room for the Dobos cake – a stunning creation that honours tradition!

Open for breakfast, with a private room to elevate the experience

It's not only delicious lunches and dinners you'll find here, but generous breakfasts too. Hősök Bistro offers an à la carte menu at affordable prices from 9 am to 11:30 am, with a mix of international and traditional Hungarian dishes. So, if you're planning to hit up museums, the zoo, or a thermal bath later, you've still got time for a leisurely brunch at Hősök Bistro!

If you try just one thing, make it bundás kenyér (Hungarian-style French toast) with smoked ham and chive cheese cream. But if you're in the mood for more, the Hungarian tasting platter with premium cold cuts and the cinnamon brioche with pear ragout and white chocolate cream from the sweet selection are also top choices.

Beyond serving guests throughout the day, the bistro also functions as an event venue. While their musical programs mainly cater to the local crowd, they also host wine tastings and offer bespoke solutions for any occasion. With a private, sectionable room ideal for corporate or family lunches and dinners (available by special arrangement), a convenient location and unforgettable flavours, Hősök Bistro is the perfect spot for any event.
