The Citadel, perched atop Gellért Hill, has been under reconstruction since 2021. And while we’ll have to go without one of the city’s best views for a little longer, the wait will be worth it – the area is set to reopen greener and more stunning than ever. Take a look!

Citadel is an impressive fortress atop Gellért Hill – a UNESCO World Heritage Site and an iconic symbol of Budapest. Oh, and did we mention it boasts one of the best views in the city? In 2021, the area closed for major reconstruction, temporarily putting those panoramic views out of reach for locals and visitors alike. But don’t worry – there’s not much longer to wait!

As part of the next phase of renovations, work has begun to green the fortress surroundings with new vegetation. Thanks to these efforts, the green space will expand to one and a half times its current size, reaching 20,000 square meters. And inside the fortress walls, a brand-new, 6,000-square-meter open public park will soon be waiting to welcome everyone.

Right now, the inner courtyard is getting a major green makeover, with 59 ornamental flowering trees and shrubs already in place – including dendrological gems like the Persian ironwood. Most of these trees are 20-year-old, pre-grown specimens, some weighing up to 300 kilograms, meaning they had to be carefully lifted into place with a crane.

But that’s just the beginning! The Citadel’s inner park, the promenade around the fortress, and the Lődomb will soon be bursting with life – not just from trees and shrubs, but also from flowering and neatly trimmed lawns, roses, lavender, climbing plants, and even grapevines. Sustainability is at the heart of the design, with irrigation water sourced from collected rainwater. Plus, the flat roofs will be transformed into lush green roofs, filled with drought-resistant plants to keep things eco-friendly and beautiful.

Restoration work is still in full swing, along with a fresh redesign of the terrace around the Liberty Statue. But here’s some good news – the Citadel’s walls have already been opened on both the northern and southern sides! The green space makeover is expected to be completed by 2026, and the inner public park won’t just be a scenic spot to relax – it’ll also feature a café, an ice cream shop, and a gift store.

Meanwhile, the cannon tower will house The Bastion of Freedom exhibition, telling the powerful story of Hungary’s struggles for independence.
