It was just after Christmas when we wrote that the UMO restaurant on Ponty utca had opened a window to the world with modern barbecue techniques, converting a former Capuchin monastery into an international bistro kitchen based on grilled cuisine.
Now that it garden has just opened, it cannot be praised enough. UMO’s multicultural concept of a window to the world remains unchanged, but the flavours now blend in even more subtle fashion than when it opened in December. The dishes are vivacious and exciting, and there’s not the slightest hesitation in the whimsy in the cocktails.
Popular already is their divine ceviche served with
sweet potato chips contains both heat-treated and marinated fish, and leche de
tigre, aka tiger milk, providing a citrus, spicy fish marinade flavour.
An
essential element of the elegantly restrained taste of the crab taco is pico de
gallo, fresh tomato salsa, a homemade tamarind sauce and a secret ingredient in
the sour cream. The UMO chicken paprikash, meanwhile, is an imaginative and
unique signature dish, as the chicken is finished on the grill and the paprika
sauce comes with a dip.
After opening on 14 May, the UMO Garden will soon host various events, such as the fusion yoga brunch series, complete with incense from Mexico. There will be a UMO Session every month with a focus on atmosphere, live DJ sets and cocktails. As part of the UMO Kitchen Takeover, foreign chefs will feature for an evening or the weekend to present a sit-down meal.
Rumour also has it that this small gastro hub on the corner of Ponty utca and Fő utca will be expanding in the coming weeks. Watch this space!
