Housing estates may not be the most picturesque of subjects for our photographers but way back when, special residential blocks were created for workers and their families. Railwaymen and gas workers were granted lodgings, then considered sought-after, with balconies, windows aplenty and often Socialist-Realist bas-reliefs over the doorway. Take a look!
Some of them in pretty shabby condition these days, Budapest’s workers’ estates were once a luxury benefit and also promoted the concept of communal living. Here’s how some of them look today:
