All kinds of drinking spots can be found in Budapest’s party quarter, ruin bars, classic pubs and cool hangouts. Now there’s another type: the Nomád Travelers’ Bar, on Wesselényi utca. Here, the concept is simple: instead of tourists and weekend hedonists, the NTB beckons real travellers and open-minded adventurers who see the whole world as their home.

From the outside, there’s nothing immediately special about the Nomád, but that soon changes once you walk in. Electro at conversational volume thuds away pleasantly as you approach one of three long counters in a spacious interior, making ordering easy. English is the lingua franca, the staff mainly composed of local expats.

Larger groups can easily find a place along the wooden tables, while couples and rendezvousing friends can find their own spot in more intimate surroundings. Above the back counters, there’s also room for a smaller gallery, plus a couple of tables.

Prices are average for the bar vortex, standard cocktails (Sex on the Beach, Tequila Sunrise) at 1,500 to 2,500 forints and draught beers (Dreher’s Hideg Komlós, Pilsner, Kronenbourg) at 850 to 1,000 forints. House wine goes for a reasonable 330 forints a decilitre, with a selection from the prestigious Bock Cellar running at 550 forints by the decilitre.

Carnivores and vegetarians can tuck into Balkan beef hash and chili sin carne, with two sizes of portion in the 2,000-2,500 forint range.

At some point, DJs spin, quieter concerts strum and Open Mic evenings unfold for budding songwriters and slam poets. Themed evenings include drunken painting.
