The domain of anglers, dog walkers and SUP exponents, Soroksár beach in deepest, southest Pest is only known to locals. Down here, a few hundred steps from the city limits, lapped by the Ráckeve-Soroksár branch of the Danube, the Nocsak Bár offers a terrace overlooking the water, top-quality street food and serene relaxation.

Distant yet accessible, the Nocsak Bár announced the coming of summer with a season-opening party on 29 May. It attracts a solid core of regulars who like nothing better than to sit by the Danube and sip fine wine.

Ideal for cyclists – it’s even on the Budapest-Belgrade section of the EuroVelo 6 route from the Atlantic to the Black Sea – and a cinch for the car-free by HÉV to nearby Millenniumtelep, this green getaway also appeals to outdoor types, given the nearby SUP rental outlet. You can also rent a boat to take you up and down the water.

The street food is another plus. Thin-dough pizzas (basic at 1,790 HUF to Parma ham at 2,850 HUF) are kneaded from Italian flour. Handcrafted burgers with cheddar, bacon and special sauces are 2,490 forints, sweet potatoes extra, with the vegetarian option of grilled camembert at 2,190 forints. Hake come at 1,590 forints for 300gr, African catfish & chips is 2,190 forints.

Wines have been carefully selected, with plenty of options in three colours. Homemade lemonade and iced tea in several flavours deserve special mention, half-litres at 890 forints, full of chunky ingredients.

The Nocsak Bár is constantly evolving, appealing to families looking for a reliable destination in this hitherto undeservedly forgotten nook of south Pest. Just don’t disturb the anglers.
