In news revealed at a global presentation this week by Marriott Hotels, celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck will be overseeing culinary operations at the Matild Palace, the latest member in its Luxury Collection due to open in downtown Budapest later this spring. The man behind the legendary Spago restaurant in Beverly Hills returns Central Europe to embrace its glamour and sophistication once more.
Wolfgang Puck, of Austrian descent, began cooking as a child and began learning the craft at 14. As a young chef, he has found himself in some of France’s most renowned restaurants, including Maxim’s in Paris, Hôtel de Paris Monte-Carlo and L’Oustau de Baumanière in Provence, with three Michelin stars. At the age of 24, Wolfgang took a friend’s advice and moved to the States.
His famous Spago restaurant showcased the best of his gastronomic offerings. Opened in 1982 in West Hollywood, the first Spago was an immediate success and he was showered with accolades: the AAA Four Diamond Award and two Michelin stars.
Today, Puck has become synonymous with a bold, innovative culinary style that has redefined fine dining in America and around the world. His own special dishes and lively personality have revolutionised the gastronomic industry.
After many years, Puck is now returning to Central Europe, and the Matild Palace, with three special venues and a gastronomic concept, where his kitchen team is strengthened by the most talented Hungarian chefs.

Located on the corner of Váci utca near the Pest foot of Elizabeth Palace, Spago by Wolfgang Puck features a modern design, a lounge area and a huge terrace overlooking Duna utca. Spago will most likely bring a whole new gastronomic culture to Budapest, combining Puck’s Californian know-how with Hungarian tradition and local ingredients.
Opening in September, the Matild Café & Cabaret is a reinvention of one of Europe’s most iconic historic cafés, the Belvárosi Kávéház, founded in 1901. Here, Puck also offers specialities in the field of coffee, cakes, pastries and more substantial dishes.
The Duchess will embellish the rooftop bar scene across the Hungarian capital,
offering unparalleled views of Elizabeth Bridge, the Danube and Gellért Hill.
It
was inspired by Archduchess Mária Klotild, for whom the original Matild Palace
was supplemented with a hidden roof that served as a meeting place for her social
circle. The path to the fashionable bar leads through a secret entrance:
private lifts take you up, guests greeted by a mystical world of glamour,
gastronomy, cocktails and music.
