Christmas has come back to the Basilica with light shows, an ice rink and musical performances, as well as stalls lined with artefacts created by nearly 100 artists.

The Christmas market at the Basilica, voted the most beautiful in Europe in 2019, is very much back in operation this year, as signified by the giant 12-metre tree right in front of the church.

You can skate on the cosy ice rink, admire the light show and watch blacksmiths at work. The first Advent candle has already been lit, with songs from the Together Gospel Singers.

Vote for Budapest!

Don’t forget to vote for Budapest this year as your favourite Christmas market!

As well as light and music shows, nearly 100 exhibitors are presenting all kinds of gift ideas, wonderful ceramics, jewellery, leather and textile goods, pictures created with different techniques and children’s toys.

Ceramic Advent wreaths are also available, courtesy Kerámia Kályha Készítő, equally responsible for the candlelit Christmas trees in different sizes. Look out, too for fun glass jewellery by Giranelli, natural ornaments by Parpar Art, Budapest-themed engravings by Citygraph, leather goods by Pankotai and other wonderful products.

The gastronomic offer leans towards traditional flavours, accompanied by indispensable mulled wine and aromatic chimney cake. You can also donate to the Hungarian Ecumenical Relief Organisation, while their volunteers dish out homemade gingerbread.

Vaccination certificates are required for entry, or a negative PCR test within the last 72 hours. Anyone unable to present either of these can still enjoy the Christmas atmosphere by taking in the outdoor photo exhibition in the square. Surrounding restaurants and the Basilica itself are also open.
