In the US, American families gather to give thanks every fourth Thursday of November. Thanksgiving dinner this Thursday will be a really traditional event at American Corner Budapest, where participants can get to know the roots of this annual get-together and chat in friendly company while enjoying an authentic Thanksgiving dinner.
The organisers are also preparing a Gratitude Game, trivia fun and, of course, the traditional Thanksgiving menu. There will be also a
bonus prize for those brave enough to bake at home and then bring the
delicacies with them. You can also contribute with your favourite side dish.
Socialising
will be in English, so it would be good for non-natives to have conversational level. The age
limit is between 16-25. The event is free but registration is required as organisers need to judge numbers.
American Corners are scattered around the world, part of an outreach initiative within the US State Department aiming to spread democratic values and human rights awareness. Their activities vary from debates to light entertainment such as comedy theatre and conversation clubs. The events are always free and everyone is invited. It's a non-profit organisation – you only have to register.
Visitors vary in terms of age and occupation, students are just as welcome as workers, interns and retirees.
Expats also willingly help out, taking regular conversation sessions, allowing English learners to practise the language in a fun and relaxed atmosphere. American Corner also serves as a meeting place for expats so they can make new friends and meet at more events in the future.
