Márton Sütő and his bandmate Dávid Szegő are the faces behind The Budapest Turnarounds, an experimental jazz group performing since 2017. Both graduates of the Franz Liszt Music Academy, the classically trained duo are gearing up for long-awaited concerts in July, after the performance hiatus experienced by all during the lockdown.

Those looking for a unique experience will be hard-pressed to find something more intriguing than the poly-rhythmical arrangements and exploratory style of The Budapest Turnarounds. “We started by experimenting with short, weird musical expressions,” says Márton, “played back several times, and using that as a base for improvisation”. Each song is a journey through time and space, with the shortest clocking in at four minutes, and longer melodies taking listeners through an odyssey of music lasting up to 14 minutes.

With only a guitar and drum between the two of them, The Budapest Turnarounds manage to create a fully-fleshed, engaging listening experience that would be the envy of many performing groups. Subtle undercurrents of melody are accentuated by peaks of oscillating riffs, with snappy drum beats punctuating the moments in between refrains.

The band’s name is a jazz expression, referencing the moments in the last bars of the song, when the chords lead back to the beginning of the song. The Budapest Turnarounds feature their music on BandCamp and YouTube, with no official released music, only live recordings with videos. Performances include locations in Budapest such as Szimpla, Akvarium and the A38 Boat, to name only a handful. One memorable experience was a concert at Pontoon, with an approaching storm adding some extra drama and excitement to the show!

July is an exciting month for the duo, as Márton explains. Their first concert will be held on 7 July at the Opus Jazz Club, and the second at midnight on Friday, 30 July in Kapolcs as part of the Művészetek Völgye festival.

The jazz scene in Budapest is robust, and The Budapest Turnarounds are a great way to step into that world and experience something new. Ethereal melodies, spontaneous actions and interactions and an “unforgettable four-dimensional journey filled with mysterious emotions and high energy” can all be expected from one of their concerts.
