All the rage in France, French tacos are a mix of panini, kebab and burrito, said to have been conceived in the suburbs of the country’s gastronomic capital, Lyon. Now a Hungarian with several years’ experience abroad is bringing this Franco-Arab street food to Budapest – right on the city’s fashionable showcase boulevard, Andrássy út.

Living abroad for several years, Hungarian Edy travelled around the Far East and eventually settled in Vietnam, where he earned a living as an English teacher. Naturally, he was introduced to French tacos, popular across the French-speaking world. When he returned home due to the pandemic, sitting on the plane, the idea came to him to introduce this superior street food to Hungary.

The fixed elements of Edy’s French tacos are: tortilla bread, cheese, homemade aioli, beef or chicken breast or falafel, lettuce, onion and tomatoes or shakshuka, French fries, sauce of choice.

The falafel is vegan and gluten-free, a reworking of an Israeli recipe with lots of fresh coriander and parsley, dried chickpeas and cumin. The tacos can be supplemented with extras. After filling, it is folded and smeared with olive oil on the grill to give it its final shape and texture.

Of the ten sauces to choose from, six are homemade, in addition to the fixed aioli, there’s Algerian, sweet, burger, lemon-and-pepper and the fiery Samurai, fashioned from four types of chili.

The four ready-made sauces are mayonnaise, ketchup, spicy sriracha and a moderately spicy chin-su that pays homage to Vietnam. In addition to sauces, Edy pays attention to freshness, ordering two or three times a week rather than putting meat and vegetables in the fridge for days.

There are three sizes to choose from: M (1,850 HUF), L (2,250 HUF) and XL (3,850 HUF), with extra toppings (250-350 HUF) and snacks (300-750 HUF) if required. The L will fill you up, but the homemade sauces make for a more complex and invigorating experience.

The selection of drinks is also interesting, with beers from Czech Primator brewery in Náchod, BudaPrés ciders from Etyek apples, 100% DÉR Juices such as ginger-and-apple. The walls were imaginatively covered by the creative, cat-loving team at Twinstrippin.

Overall, Edy’s French Tacos has an international, contemporary, street-food buzz just right for post-pandemic times. And the snacks are great.
