The Association of Contemporary Galleries is organising the seventh Gallery Weekend Budapest, a festival of Hungarian contemporary art, on June 18-20.

Gallery Weekend events are held in many major cities around the world, including Chicago, Havana, Mexico City, Beijing and Tel Aviv.

Here in Budapest, contemporary art takes centre stage over the weekend of 18-20 June. This three-day event features exhibitions, offbeat gallery visits and guided tours, which involve groups of up to ten people twice a day with five routes marked out.

Registration is required. Organisers will shape the schedule with the current pandemic regulations in mind.

This year’s motto will be, ‘Contemporary art expresses me’.

Art in the time of Covid

As the Gallery Weekend Budapest team explains: “This not only indicates that art is one of the most defining forms of self-expression, but also points out that we have an even greater need here and now to find the things we can identify with. During the pandemic, the concept of self-understanding, perception and a sense of uniqueness became even more valuable".

All tolled, 14 contemporary galleries are involved: acb, Erika Deák, Einspach Fine Art & Photography, Glassyard, INDA, Kálmán Makláry Fine Arts, Kisterem, Knoll Budapest, MissionArt, Ani Molnár, MyMuseum, TOBE, Várfok and VILTIN. Admission will be free.
