Eco-conscious consumers seeking products from reliable sources have ever more shops to choose from in Budapest. Most recently, these include the new outlet of Neked Terem, previously only available online.

The pandemic has made it more difficult to locate reliable high-quality products, but standing in stores reading labels for hours on end is not the best way to spend your time. Browsing online is an easier and safer alternative – Neked Terem was one of the first stores to offer fine foods from Hungarian small producers online.

Organic food home-delivered

They started their home delivery system in 2012, connecting these Hungarian producers with consumers looking for local, healthy and organic goods. Initially, the idea was based on shipping out fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables in boxes.

This is great for those who don’t have a farmer’s market nearby, but still want to enjoy the taste of garden-grown fruit and veg. In addition, you can also choose from a wide variety of meat and dairy products, as well as processed foods on the online store. They ship the goods nationwide, several times a week.

Store manager Eszter Molnár says that their already growing client base skyrocketed during the pandemic, which is why they had to move into a larger office and warehouse, on Bécsi út in Óbuda. Since customers had also been showing interest in shopping in person, a physical store has been set up in one of the corners of the building.

To avoid the hassle of shipping, or to get the goods quicker, the store also allows shoppers to pick up their orders in person, as well as to see the products for themselves.

There’s no complete overlap between the online offers and the items found at the store, which has a slightly smaller range with non-perishable foods, smoked goods, cheeses, jams, cordials, cereals, wines, fruit and vegetables, as well as package-free legumes and seeds.

Popular Hungarian organic brands

The store offers many popular Hungarian brands: vegetable spreads by Szorgos Gazda, cordials and jams by Venyige Tanya, tea by Mariann Beh, egg-free pasta by Míves Manufaktúra, organic flour by Pásztói Malom, farm-fresh eggs by the Heppenheimer family and mustard by Ghaurved – all high-quality products, some of them rare gems to come across even in Budapest.

After the pandemic passes, the terrace in front of the store will open for everyone to enjoy a cup of coffee in the fresh air – for now, coffee is for takeaway only. According to their plans, the Neked Terem team will also be holding farmer’s markets at some point in the future.
