The Ludwig has just been named Museum of the Year for 2020, the first time that the prize has gone to an institution whose main remit is contemporary art. The award is given by the Pulszky Society, the professional association for museums in Hungary. Both the Ludwig and the association recently celebrated their 30th anniversaries.
The Ludwig has been bestowed with this annual award partly for ‘its systematic and outstanding work’ but also for its ‘outstanding performance in publishing museum content, exchange of knowledge, its reception of visitors and the development of museum services, and its role in social responsibility’.
The main home of challenging contemporary art in Hungary, based in the millennial cultural quarter in south Pest, the Ludwig also gained kudos for its pioneering work in the field of media art and preservation of digital content. The museum has become a major player in the region, another factor in it being granted this prestigious prize.
