The annual London-based International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC) proved a happy hunting ground for Hungary in 2020, as the First Hungarian Gin Manufactory entered its Opera Gin Budapest, scoring 96/100 points, and placing 4th.

In the more than 50 years of the IWSC’s history, Hungarian entries have achieved success in the wine, brandy and champagne categories, but this recognition of its domestic artisanal gin is the most significant achievement in half a century. Judges described the Opera Gin Budapest, produced by Bálint Dámosy, as:

“Unctuous lemon flesh and waxy, aromatic juniper are harmoniously united, rounded and concentrated components of this expressive and balanced spirit. An exceptionally fine example and a real pleasure for the senses.”

More than 90 countries take part in the competition, and tastings take almost half a year. 250 professionals are consulted on the quality of each product. News of the Hungarian gin win has caught on fast, and is being displayed in famous bars and restaurants around Hungary.
