After the birth of her fourth child, Mónika Kalmár Kövérné decided to quit her job and start something new. At first, the Balaton-based mother only blogged about baking, but soon her recipes attracted attention, and from there she began baking for a café in Keszthely. Her fame only grew from there, and before long she was making cakes and pastries for confectioneries across Transdanubia.
In 2018, Mónika was rated among the top ten best provincial pâtisseries in Hungary, inspiring her to open her own place. Mónisüti in Gyenesdiás has been one of the most popular cake shops on Balaton's northern shore ever since, with a new operation now opening up in Budapest.
While a permanent location in the capital is still being decided, custom is already coming in thick and fast. Choosing from the selection on their Facebook page, orders can be placed by the Wednesday of each week. The cakes and pastries can then be picked up at Babka at the end of the week and, in the case of larger orders, can even be delivered to your home.
Another special offer of the confectionery shop is the lagzibox, lagzi meaning a wedding party. The skilled bakers are prepared to tackle all the traditional Hungarian treats necessary for a customary Christening, banquet or other special event, using the very best ingredients.
