Ever more exciting places are opening around Kolosy tér, the hub of Óbuda, surrounded by offices and small businesses at this busy junction north of Buda. The latest is Panna, which combines Belgian-style treats – pancakes, chocolates and waffles – with Spanish favourites such as churros in a gaudy Barbie-meets-Wes-Anderson setting. The Belgian influence is no coincidence, as the co-owner and chef come from the Benelux.
Drinks have been given as much attention as the comestibles – note the enormous, fire-red Lamborghini Sanremo coffee machine at the entrance. You can choose between a darker roast or a lighter, softer one. The hot chocolate, Belgian, of course, comes in creamy, thick, pudding, classic and white versions (890 HUF), while the organic teas (600 HUF) also come in several varieties.
The main focus, however, is on the desserts. Although there are only four main types on the menu, adding all the fruit and toppings expand your options considerably. Selecting a giant pancake (450 HUF) or a waffle as your base (200 HUF), you can add Belgian chocolate, Nutella or apricot jam (300 HUF), then a choice of banana, strawberry, blueberry or fruits of the forest (300 HUF), and finally the colourful-scented toppings, which start with whipped cream and maple syrup, and move on to Kinder Bueno, Oreo and all kinds of sprinkles.
Alternatively, Panna also offers churros (450 HUF) and waffle stix (700 HUF/piece). The sugar-coated Spanish delicacy can be paired with Nutella or caramel sauce, while the waffle stix come with delicious chocolate and toppings. While basic waffles resembles the Brussels version, the waffle stix follow the Liège method, resulting in a heavier, thicker dough.
With a long counter lined with bar stools and a kids’ corner, Panna is the right place for those looking to indulge in a mild sugar rush, and letting their inner child run riot.
