The quiet area of Buda in the shadow of Castle Hill is not known for its bustling bar and café life. But now two places have opened that aim to redress the balance. Set close to each other at Mária tér, Budapest Kávé Művek and Kaffantó should attract people up the hill from Batthyány tér or down the hill from the junction of Csalogány utca and Batthyány utca.

Budapest Kávé Művek

This new café on Mária tér was opened by Zoltán Lóránth and Gréta Vágújhelyi, who had previously had great success with bakeries in New Zealand. Here they picked up on the craze for new-wave cafés, and Zoltán also trained as a coffee roaster. There is a small, homemade roaster on the café gallery, while barista Bálint Kerekes prepares the drinks. Their coffee has been named Di Budapester, the regular blend Hajnali részegség, ‘Dawn Drunkenness’. It can also be taken home in packs of 100 and 250 grams.

It is roasted a little darker for guests who like a traditional espresso but not the perky, burnt, Italian type. In addition, there is a regularly changing, fruity single-origin variety. Every one of the espresso bases is a double and is surprisingly affordable compared to other new-wave cafés at 390 forints. Croissants are available to snack upon, while revered cocoa swirls come from nearby artisanal bakery Pékműhely. Retro coffee roasters and radios, pastel colours, vintage décor and ivy add cosy touches as you find a place on a small bench by the entrance.

Kaffantó

Just up from Mária tér, Kaffantó is that unusual combination: a new-wave café and a showroom for state-of-the-art rowing machines. Surrounded by fitness equipment and the neat, light wood of a Scandinavian-looking interior, Kaffantó is still a work in progress but already offers delicious banana bread, brioches and pretzels, alongside coffee from an MTRM roaster, and milk from the Hétforrás estate of free-range cows.
