This Friday, 29 March, a fleet of fancy food trucks rolls into Vegan Garden, a popular Budapest hotspot for plant-based eats. From burgers to desserts and drinks, all treats served here are made without using ingredients of animal origin. The opening event begins on Friday afternoon and lasts for three days.

Burgers with vegan patties, plant-based Mexican tortillas and dairy-free ice cream will all be on offer at Vegan Garden, a unique Budapest dining destination supporting this increasingly popular lifestyle. Inaugurated a year ago in an empty plot within the historic Jewish District, this alfresco food court was closed during the colder months. After a successful first season, it reopens renewed at the Rácskert garden this Friday.

For the launch, vegan gastronomy celebrity Kristóf Steiner is hosting two dinner events, beginning at 5pm and at 7pm. The treats he serves for this culinary gathering are also gluten-free and include mushroom ragout, palak paneer, shakshuka and vegan cheesecake. See this website for tickets to this special dinner. Kristóf also has his own food truck at Rácskert.

But anyone is welcome to pop by and browse the delicate selection at each food truck, including drinks made according to a vegan lifestyle. On Saturday and Sunday, a vegan market and workshops will also promote this sustainable dietary movement. The food trucks will be operating from noon on Friday and serve dishes until 11pm.

From excessive water use to greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation, animal farming has been proved to have detrimental impact on the environment. In recent years, several new hangouts have opened in Budapest to support diets that eliminate meat or are based entirely on plants. Whether you are already a vegetarian or vegan or just want to cut down on your meat consumption, eating out in Budapest shouldn’t pose a challenge to your dietary preferences.
