There's nothing more Hungarian than jamming a slice of meat deep-fried in breadcrumbs between two buns and drowning it in sauces and salad. See for yourself at Devil’s prézli on Lövőház utca, where black buns, three types of meat, great homemade sauces and fresh salads make these Magyar-style burgers a carnivorous delight.

A great love of meat has brought about a tiny niche eatery on Lövőház utca, Devil’s prézli, that offers Hungarian-style burgers as tasty and fresh as it gets.

There are not too many quality places offering sandwiches like these in Budapest, a gap in the market the owners of Devil’s prézli wish to fill. A vacant store became available, the team then experimented with flavours and created new combinations, and finally Devil’s prézli opened in January. We popped in to try their sandwiches.

The base is deep-fried meat and you can choose between chicken breast, leg, shoulder or loin. Think bigger slices of 14 dkg each, made more flavourful by homemade sauces. You can put your own sandwich together or can buy the slice of meat on its own (590 forints). We put ourselves in the hands of the pros. For now, there are eight combinations on the menu – from basic coleslaw-salad-chicken (990 forints) to a double-meat monster (1,890 forints). Many of the sauces include chili, and they invented extras like cucumber-jam and grilled paprika ragout. You can choose between a regular or a black bun – the latter coloured with cuttlefish.

The meats are fried in a special mix of oils, paying extra attention to freshness and avoiding that unpleasant aftertaste, achieving a juicy texture inside and a crunchy one outside. Our favourites were the leg and the loin sandwiches – even though there are generous fillings in these sandwiches, instead of overpowering each other, the flavours are in perfect harmony.

We tried the Bavarian-style horseradish-sour-cream-bacon and coleslaw sandwich with loin (1,290 forints). Afterwards we had the chicken leg-cucumber jam, salad, cheddar, bacon and devil’s sauce sandwich (1,290 forints) and, finally, the monster of them all, the black bun filled with double meat, grilled paprika ragout and jalapeño – we think that this one is easily enough for two.

At Devil's, the prices are really affordable, the meats are juicy and the sandwich creations clever. A terrace will open in the summer and BBQ will soon be introduced.
