At Nem Adom Fel, which translates as ‘I Won’t Give Up’, nearly all employees live with some kind of disability. While this compassionate concept and a very welcoming atmosphere already make this café a pleasant place, now there is one more reason to have your coffee and cake here: a huge comic book selection holding everything from Batman to Watchmen.

Complete with an online catalogue, the comic books are displayed at the café according to category. And in addition to Hungarian publications, a great selection of foreign-language editions – English, German, Italian and Macedonian, African books and even Japanese mangas – line the shelves.

The café receives many donations from local and foreign publishing houses, and collectors. Back in December, they started with a selection of about 300 comic books, a number since doubled in under a month. As we found out, Nem Adom Fel even has an African comic anthology.

Although referred to as a comics library, here books cannot be taken out, only read on the spot. Then again, as enjoying a drink, sandwich and a cake here – all very reasonably priced – serves a good cause, sitting down for a while to read a comic book is hardly a sacrifice. By giving employees a rare opportunity to gain real-world work experience and interact with everyday people in an ordinary environment, Nem Adom Fel lets these workers demonstrate their considerable capabilities, and help fulfil the café’s most important mission.
