September 24th, 1918 marked the opening of Buda’s Art Nouveau attraction, the Gellért Hotel. Serving as a military base in its early days after World War I, this palatial riverfront building has accommodated the likes of former US president Richard Nixon, the last Shah of Iran and the Dalai Lama. Some guests have a suite named after them in the hotel, overseen by the Danubius Hotels Group. When the kitchen was headed by famous restaurateur Károly Gundel, Gellért gastronomy also earned worldwide fame. Meanwhile, its splendid baths decorated with turquoise Zsolnay tiles are second to none. Here is a pictorial history of this legendary hotel.
