Summer’s popular open-air movie nights at Budapest Rooftop Cinema are shifting from Corvin Club in District VIII to another lofty location within the same neighbourhood. Today, a screening of classic American musical “Grease” will feature at the new cinematic site atop Corvin Plaza, a shopping mall by the Grand Boulevard. The relocation comes after officials ordered the closure of the Corvin Club party venue that had previously been hosting the English-friendly Rooftop Cinema series.

Earlier this month, the VIII District Council announced that popular cult venues Corvin Club and Auróra will be closed to the public due to alleged unlawful activities on the premises. Causing quite a stir in the public sphere, the decision also put in jeopardy other operations attached to these locales. One such was the Budapest Rooftop Cinema that has been screening classic films and hot flicks atop Corvin Club every summer – this filmic attraction needed another base.

It has just been announced that the reels won’t stop spinning, but that alfresco film showings are now moving to the Corvin Plaza rooftop, just a few tram stops from Blaha Lujza tér, home to the now-suspended Corvin Club. For the rest of the summer, the Budapest Rooftop Cinema Special Edition will be screening classic and cult movies atop the shopping mall.

The day after Grease, on August 2nd film buffs can see Christopher Nolan’s popular Batman adaptation, The Dark Knight. On August 3rd, Hungarian biographical crime thriller The Whisky Robber plays with original Hungarian audio and English subtitles. Then on Saturday, UK romantic comedy Love Actually triggers familiar emotions.

Movies start at 7pm. Tickets cost 990 forints and are available on the OneTicket website. Visit the Budapest Rooftop Cinema Facebook page for more information.
