The restaurant is named after Interstate 55, a major highway that spans across central US from south to north, from the Gulf of Mexico to the Great Lakes. It’s a fitting name for a place that takes on the challenge to present US gastronomy in its entirety, from deep-dish pizza to Cajun cuisine.
Dávid and Péter Kiss, owners of Beer & Burger and the Budapest Barbecue Company, visited countless restaurants and diners along this famous route to find the very best recipes, which they're now bringing to Budapest's Bajcsy-Zsilinszky út.
The signature dish of I 55 is deep-dish pizza from Chicago, which you could not find anywhere else in Hungary until now. This version is as thick as a pie, with cheddar and potatoes blended in the dough, and topped with Italian mozzarella, cheddar, ricotta, meat, vegetables and, finally, a thick, spicy tomato sauce.
At I 55, the smallest pizza is a ten-inch version, more than enough for two people, but if you’d like to take on a real challenge with your friends, ask for the epic 14-inch, eight-pound variety.
Pizza pies, priced between 4,990 to 11,990 forints, are hearty and filling, with lashings of delicious cheese and crispy dough. I 55 plans to introduce a smaller version for lunchtime which will take less time to prepare – large pizzas usually need 30 minutes.
The restaurant also offers fantastic slow-cooked meat, snack platters (onion rings, roast potatoes, nachos, Philly cream cheese balls, jalapeño poppers) and quesadillas.
