Hit movie “Grand Budapest Hotel” has prompted Australian architects to build one of China’s most whimsical hangouts, providing it with the name of Budapest Café. Since Wes Anderson’s Oscar-laden film was released in 2014, it has inspired numerous designers around the world to come up with imaginative new interiors. This one, located in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, is more minimalist and pastel-hued, sure to encourage customers to share their enthusiasm on social media. An opening date is imminent.

Melbourne-based interior-design studio Biasol has moved Budapest to Asia, more specifically, to China’s Sichuan province. Here in Chengdu, the Budapest Café is aiming at Chinese locals thirsty for international café culture, its colors echoing the façades created by American cinematic guru Wes Anderson for his 2014 flick and acclaimed smash Grand Budapest Hotel.

“The Budapest Café is designed to feel feminine and fun, and layers, elevations and surprising design features encourage customers to explore and physically engage with the space,” writes Biasol on its website. “The concept, colors and details continue through the branding, which is integrated into the design of the café to contribute to the imaginative and evocative space,” add the designers.

Similarly to Anderson’s movie, this dreamlike refuge features the Hungarian capital in name only and it doesn’t pretend to recreate real-life Budapest scenes. However, with its imminent opening, our city will see its international profile raised and more appearances amid China’s hottest hashtags.
