September is a perfect month to spend some time satisfying our thirst for culture at galleries and museums. Fortunately, during this upcoming weekend this will be truly easy in Budapest, as a total of 12 galleries open their doors to visitors for free, aiming to create interaction between modern Magyar artists and art aficionados, while popularizing contemporary arts, more precisely Hungarian abstract art. Guided tours, intriguing exhibits, fresh openings, art experts, and plenty of exciting programs await everyone between Saturday and Sunday during Gallery Weekend Budapest.

Spanning September 9-10, Gallery Weekend Budapest – organized for the fourth time this year – is an independent contemporary-art initiative that serves as a professional platform for commercial galleries to gather internationally recognized figures from the sparkling art scene of Budapest. A total of 12 galleries join forces to bring Hungarian contemporary arts closer to city dwellers through plenty of exciting programs and displays that are free to visit. Furthermore, participating artists and gallery owners are glad to talk about the exhibited pieces with visitors, creating an intriguing dialogue between art lovers.

To highlight a few intriguing exhibits on view this weekend, Art+Text Budapest presents a show entitled “noir et blanc”, presenting works by one of the last great Hungarian abstract masters, Tamás Konok, along with Katalin Hetey, known for her geometric sculptures. The exhibition showcases a selection of artworks from both artists, from the early arte povera sculptures and monochrome reliefs to plaster objects to reductive sign forms and geometric structures. The title of the Faur Zsófi Gallery exhibition, “Moments of Being”, is identical to the name of Virginia Woolf’s autobiographical novel published after her death. The large-scale oil paintings present personal stories in an abstract form.

INDA Gallery presents the works of Ágnes Eperjesi, inspired by over 300 colored soap bars carved by hand. These soaps were given to the artist by her friends, the parents of an autistic young man named Dávid. For many years now, Dávid has been carving scented soap bars with his fingernails day by day – this hard daily labor became the basis of the installation. Furthermore, the Ani Molnár Gallery presents Sári Ember’s latest works that are close follow-ups on her previous exhibitions from a different, fictive point of view, in which she rediscovers her outlook on the topics of family heritage, procession of the course of the past, and people’s relation to objects.

In addition to the aforementioned displays, a group exhibition also takes place in the Budapest Projekt Gallery. “Irreconcilables” includes one selected artwork from each of the participating galleries. The group exhibition presents the wilder side of contemporary Hungarian art, with sculptures made from polyurethane foam, cardboard paintings, and flashing lights, revealing beauty and real values even when they hide behind dirt.
