Hungary’s charming town of Tapolca – found just a short drive north of Lake Balaton – features many picturesque settings on the community’s surface, but it’s what hides deep beneath the ground that draws visitors here from around the world. The unique Tapolca Lake-Cave is a huge subterranean realm that features a sprawling underwater body of water running through interconnected caverns that can be explored by rowboat – and in the next episode of our video series highlighting diverse destinations to discover across Hungary, we venture down into this family-friendly underground attraction.

In the English-subtitled video below, provided to We Love Budapest by the Hungarian Tourism Agency as part of their “Hungary Awaits You” campaign to showcase the wide assortment of attractions to discover across the country, we can admire alluring drone footage of the town of Tapolca before heading deep into the abyss beneath its streets, where a labyrinth of naturally carved caverns welcomes visitors of all ages to become intrepid spelunkers on foot and by boat:

How to get there from Budapest: by rail, direct trains take passengers from Budapest’s Déli Station to Tapolca multiple times daily; see the official Hungarian railway website for timetables and ticket info. By car, take motorway M7 west of Budapest (make sure to buy a motorway pass) until reaching exit 57, the turnoff to main road 7, and at the end of the off-ramp, turn right onto main road 7 towards “Székesfehérvár kelet”. Follow main road 7 around central Székesfehérvár until reaching the juncture with main road 8 towards Veszprém, and turn right onto main road 8 and keep following it to the outskirts of Veszprém and as main road 8 turns into the ring road circling around the southern part of the city. When you reach the juncture with main road 77, turn left toward Tapolca and continue following main road 77 until reaching the first roundabout in the town of Tapolca. At this roundabout, take the first right onto Kossuth Lajos utca, and follow it until reaching Kisfaludy utca on the right – turn right onto this street, and the entrance to the Tapolca Lake-Cave is on the right side of Kisfaludy utca after just a few meters.
