With summer-vacation time now officially over, students and workers are seeking new notepads, tote bags, and other work supplies – but it would be nice to get stationery with genuine style. Fortunately, Budapest has Fiók (translating to “Drawer”), a lovely hybrid of a well-equipped stationery store and a creative workshop. Along with all necessary office materials, technical drawing tools, and sketchbooks, Fiók is filled with plenty of goods that are endearing to the heart and easy on the eyes – mostly produced by Hungarian designers, but also including some top-quality products from abroad.

When September arrives, even those who no longer go to school feel nostalgic about how excited they felt about getting new pencils, erasers, and nice new notebooks many years ago. Of course, not everyone has this kind of love for stationery, but those who have are always happy to find a nice shop for these work materials anywhere – and if it also happens to be a tasteful designer store offering genuinely stylish stationery that matches different moods, then it’s even more appealing.

Fiók is just such a shop: their stock has everything from high-quality pencils and specialized glues to printed tote bags and wooden jewelry. Their main focus is on Hungarian designers, and they pick a favorite every month – the products of the lucky winner are displayed in the shop, accompanied with an introduction of the designer.

DOT for you, Rubidium, Malinovka, Papetri Paperworks, Blacklist, FÜZET, TÁSKA, Tone, Theia Design, Noto, Printa, Absoloot, and Dobozka Manufaktúra are just a few of the local designers that they have featured.

Naturally, they keep on expanding as they keep looking for novelty, and designers often reach out to Fiók in hopes that their products can be added to the shelves. Given their simple but memorable logo and their attitude, it was almost obvious that they should create their own brand; thus they came out with a stunning metal pencil case, a canvas tote bag, and a pencil/pen holder than can be attached to a notebook or book. Besides Hungarian brands, we can also find products of unique international producers here, like the leather-bound notebooks of the German Nuuna, or Leuchtturm 1917, which is the brand of Bullet Journal – a hipster who really knows notepad trends will always choose this over a Moleskine. On top of this, Fiók also hosts workshops with different themes in the gallery of the shop, for kids, creative youth, and adults. Their previous workshops included making notebook covers, crochet bracelets, mandala drawings, and working with plaster, wax, and concrete. The management wants Fiók’s gallery to be an open place for those who don’t have their own creative space, and would like to temporarily work at an inspiring spot. Even the design of the shop is very creative due to the fact that everyone who works here is involved with arts somehow, and they shape the store differently from time to time. Fiók also has another unit on Csíky Street, only a two-minute walk away from the primary shop. They sell more professional technical tools and equipment here. We recommend the two Fiók shops of Újbuda for stationery lovers, fans of Hungarian design pieces, artists, and university students alike.
