PostBistro opened almost as a secret during this past winter; for a long time, only neighborhood locals knew about it, and most of them simply passed by wondering who would want to hang out there in the cold weather. When we first stumbled upon the place, we felt the same way, but as the skies brightened and sunshine warmed our souls, curiosity drove us to look beyond the dull exterior, only to find one of the most promising dog- and child-friendly beer gardens of the area.
The appealingly ramshackle place, built mainly from canvas, pallets, and wooden structures, is located in the parking lot of the former Post Palace, and it inherited the institution’s playground, as well. The re-painted garden furniture, jungle gym, and swings make PostBistro an excellent spot for an after-lunch coffee, an afternoon fröccs, or meeting friends in the evening.
However, the term “bistro” is a bit misleading: unfortunately, the place doesn’t serve hot dishes (although they did give it a try during wintertime), except for some pretty great hot sandwiches (700 HUF). They might have to work a bit more on this aspect as hopefully more customers will arrive soon, demanding food to accompany their drinks.
Speaking of which, we cannot complain about the drink selection, which includes excellent Hungarian wines (Konyári, Sauska, Nyakas), Panyolai pálinka, a strong vodka selection, ten kinds of whiskey, and various cocktails – we’re certain that bibulous mailman Cliff Clavin would approve. We are happy to see this addition of a new outdoor pub in an area of the city that is generally lacking such drinking destinations – and making this special delivery even more appealing, the management of PostBistro also plans to set up a projector for broadcasting various sports events.
