Take a trip through time by watching a recently unearthed half-hour film produced for Norwegian television in the ’70s, titled “Rendezvous in Budapest” (“Stevnemøte i Budapest”). The travelogue guides viewers through significant sights of our city at the height of Hungary’s era under communism, as Kati Kovács – one of the most famous Hungarian singers of that time – leads us through a day in Budapest’s past.
The film crew enjoys a concert by Hungary’s Bergendy band in the former Youth Park (today’s Várkert Bazaar), before taking a ride aboard an old-fashioned car and later strolling the streets of Buda. There they admire the Matthias Church and its surroundings, and then drive to Margaret Island, and soon Kati Kovács starts singing, inspiring the filmmakers to randomly shoot a music video among the old buildings of Budapest. To end the day well, they visit a café, and finally we find ourselves at a jazz-ballet ball held on top of a boat. This video brings back Hungary’s true ’70s spirit by giving us a glance into the world of neon lights and old city signs – watch the film here to enjoy this Budapest blast from the past!
