Beginning at Király Street near the Art Nouveau Liszt Academy, District VII’s Kertész Street is becoming a hot destination among those shopping for special needs: this is where you’ll find the innovative, gluten-free canteen Köles, the neighborhood’s own bio corner shop, and a pioneering beauty salon that only uses natural cosmetic products. The latest addition to this street, Born 2 Bio, is one of the biggest bio stores in Budapest both in terms of size and variety, and it even boasts a welcoming on-site organic café.
Occupying a floor space of 110 square meters, this family business proffers about 1,200 kinds of gluten-, lactose-, sugar-, and additive-free products, along with bio, paleo, vegetarian, and vegan items, as well as medicinal and natural foods, environmentally friendly goods, and fair-trade merchandise. Some of the things they offer – like organic diapers, coconut-based cleaning sponges, certain kinds of cornflakes, baked goods, and paper handkerchiefs – haven’t been widely available on the Hungarian market until now. Customers can buy well-known favorites as well: for example, an array of nuts and seeds, milk substitutes, special pastas, vegan cheeses, and chocolates. Born 2 Bio’s management is exceptionally proud of their wines, which are also organic; while they are far from cheap, they are definitely unique and difficult to come by elsewhere.
The adjacent café is based on a similar concept, offering energizing coffees made from organic ingredients (espresso: 450 HUF, latte: 850 HUF, cappuccino: 690 HUF), teas, freshly squeezed fruit juices, lemonades (790 HUF), and perfectly creamy smoothies. The coffee selection is definitely a specialty line, including popular varieties like V60 (690 HUF), Aeropress (690 HUF), and siphon (690 HUF).
The teas are worth checking out as well: one of the most intriguing items is their organic tea from Nepal (99 HUF), which comes in five types (white, green, wulong, red, black), and can be steeped four to ten times to release new flavors with each soaking.
Those with various allergies and food intolerances will surely be delighted to learn that the assortment of cakes and desserts features some absolutely divine organic, paleo, and gluten- and lactose-free creations, such as the orange brownie (750 HUF) and the chocolate basket (750 HUF).
The range of stocked products is not fixed yet, and the team will continue to make sure that customers have a diverse and regularly updated selection to choose from. The shop assistants are extremely helpful and eager to satisfy any demand for special or hard-to-find items that you might not be able to spot on the shelves normally.
In the future, the owners are planning on hosting workshops and lectures about healthy eating in a bid to spread awareness about the benefits and importance of organic produce.
