It is hard to argue with the fact that French, or rather, Francophone or French-speaking films are absolutely top-notch, which is why we should definitely mark this event in our diaries. Now held for the fifth time, and in Budapest’s Uránia National Film Theater, we can get to know some new creations: nearly 30 films, from 14 countries, from 27 February.

The film catalogue of the French-speaking world, which pleases cinema fans every year, is rather enviable. There are so many prestigious works that the “average moviegoer” could not hope to watch all of them. This is one of the reason why Film Days, which is part of the Francophone Film Festival, is perfect - we can cherry-picking our favourites.

The opening film of the program is the Canadian work titled Mommy, for which director Xavier Dolan was awarded the Special Jury Prize at the Cannes International Film Festival. The French road movie Menge tes morts ("Eat Your Bones" in English) shows the inner conflicts of a traveling Gypsy family living in a caravan. Its writer-director, Jean-Charles Hue, will be a guest of honour at the Francophone Film Days this year. Besides him, Laurent Cantet, who is the writer-director of the international hit The Class, will also visit us.

The film P’tit Quinquin reveals the story of an improbable investigation after a serial killer in a French seaside town. According to several critical magazines, the film is the best of last year’s films, so we are looking forward to it as well. Among the audience, the film titled Saint Laurent may be of interest; the film shows the life of the world-famous designer - Yves Saint Laurent. Finally, we are eagerly looking forward seeing the new film by the directors of the Intouchables (Éric Toledano, Olivier Nakache). After all, the protagonist of Samba is the brilliant Omar Sy.Films by Céline Sciamma and François Ozon will also be shown at the French Institute as part of the festival. Some of the films will be screened with Hungarian and English subtitles. The full price tickets cost a mere 1000 forints, and by presenting a student card or by purchasing a weekly pass, we can receive a discount.
