Some years back drinking beer was the thing of those who didn’t like to ponder a lot about what it is they consumed and thought that the people who paid 3-400 HUF more for a bottle was stupid. The pioneer of such oddballs is Gergely Kővári, founder of Csakajósör (=only the good beers).

Gergely is the founder, owner, soul and staff of Csakajósör, who is no longer regarded stupid for having a dozen different beers for 3-4-5000 HUF on sale. For, as it turned out, it was not at all beer that kept our mouths shut in the previous decades. If you visit the beer shop inKertész utca, you can see that the 4,5% pale lagers with more than enough bubbles are the significant minority. What abounds, though, are brown, black, red and amber drinks containing wild yeast, wheat, rye, millet, coriander, curaçao,kopi luwak coffee, vanilla and who knows what else. The possibilities are indeed endless.

Csakajósör is not only unique from the point of view of beer gastronomy but also of retail trade. For the shop did not come into being to satisfy a well-definable need but exactly to create said need. It’s a true gate to the realm of extraordinary beers and the shopkeeper is a guide who leads the way and shows you around. There’s no way he will say he’s only a seller and has no clue about what a given beer is like. He tried them all, he hunts them all down himself at foreign wholesalers and little Hungarian breweries. And since you can sample specialties of daily circulation from four taps, there’s life filling up the tiny shop. Sooner or later everyone interested in real beers will meet here, let alone the fact that this shop is the first target of international beer tourism in Hungary.
