The number of meat-free eateries in Budapest has been skyrocketing in recent years. Whether you are in the city centre or at a shopping mall, it’s now much easier to find a vegetarian or vegan venue than even just a few years ago. Popular lunchtime spot Nemsüti has also been riding the wave and has just opened a third outlet at the historic market hall on Klauzál tér in the Jewish District. On offer are daily lunch specials, sandwiches, salads and shakes.

Gone are the days when street-food stalls at Budapest markets were exclusively geared towards carnivores. Attracting a younger crowd, many of the city’s gastronomic bazaars now also cater to visitors who follow meat-free diets. Since reopening in 2015, historic Klauzál Square Market Hall has been welcoming a slow but steady stream of interesting outlets worth investigating.

Among these is Nemsüti, a chain of vegetarian hangouts with a busy standalone shop in District XIII and another outlet at the Downtown Market in District V. In this third branch, a limited line of food on the menu can be ordered to go or enjoyed on the spot. Nemsüti’s main appeal is its daily lunch specials, a budget-friendly concept that’s also available at the Klauzál outlet. A recent offering included tomato soup and paella – vegetarian of course.

Sandwiches, with grilled vegetables, mozzarella or goats’ cheese, are also available, as well as the eatery’s long-popular pasta salad and smoothies. All in all, this is a small but heavenly spot if you are looking for a healthier alternative to lángos or if meat isn’t your thing.

While this new outlet has already been up and running, an official opening event will inaugurate it on 16 November from 4pm, when guests can sample a variety of Nemsüti dishes.
