Patterns, sewing machines, needles and threads – we all heard about these things, and if we are lucky enough we saw them in real life too. However, most of these tools only exist in our own memories. Our grandparents were eagerly using them a couple of decades ago, but nowadays less and less people know how to sew or tailor. Fortunately there are still some experts who try to preserve the traditions of tailoring. They are the best in Budapest whom we came to know as well.

We found out how the best fitted shirts are made, we found out more about the origins of the textiles, the silks and the other kinds of special fabrics and we also managed to get behind the scenes of Budapest’s small but luxurious tailor shops. We didn’t grab the tailor’s scissors but we learned a lot anyway about the custom-made shirts.

First of all we have to say that you’ll have to be rather generous with your money if you decide to get your own tailor-made clothes. Sometimes you’ll have to be prepared to pay tens of thousands of forints for a shirt and when it comes to suits, shoes or other accessories the limit is the sky – as far as the prices are concerned.

The higher prices in these cases mean higher quality. The tailors use the best fabrics for the handmade pieces of clothing and they pay special attention to the smallest details too. So if you are getting bored with the mass produced items of the well-known fast-fashion brands then you should take a good look around the city and check out a few tailor shops. It’s okay if you would just like to visit the shops; at least you will get a glimpse of the addictive world of luxury.

Artelli – Design your own and leave the rest for the professionalsThe shop of Artelli on Paulay Ede Street is rather small but it’s not a problem at all in this case; at least it has a very friendly and pleasant atmosphere. When we arrived the owner was already there, waiting for us. He took us on a magical trip to the land of luxurious shirts and accessories. We soon found out that the shirts that are on display in the shop are just the beginning. Everyone can choose their own favourites; everyone can design their own shirt which means that the opportunities are basically endless.

The first and most important step during the tailoring of an Artelli shirt is the measuring. The shirts will be tailored in Italy according to these measurements to fit perfectly. But before the measurements get sent to the tailors the costumer can choose the colour, the fabric, the collar and even the buttons of his shirt to be. Of course there are other options to choose from as well; monograms for example can be embroidered on the pieces.

These things are quite unusual themselves and they shed light on why the shirts cost as much as they do. Not to mention that the special services and the extras are not over yet. You wonder what do we mean by that? Well for example we mean the fabrics that were made from 100% pure cotton and that came from one of the leading textile manufacturers. There are also buttons that were made from fine-quality Tahitian shells.

The tailor shop also offers home and office services – the tailor goes to the home or the office of the client to take the measurements and to discuss the details.

Probably this was the point when we started to think about the alternatives. What’s better – buying a shirt, which was manufactured in Asia in six minutes, in a crowded shopping centre for a gratuitously high price or getting a custom-made unique piece for the same price that was designed and created by tailors who worked for days and days?

During our little trip to Artelli we experienced a lot and we learned to take a view on things from a totally different perspective. Everything here is a piece of art, the details reflect on the personality of the costumer. The fine quality is provided by the fabrics of renowned Thomas Mason bespoke, the classic Italian style and the perfect fitting is provided by the excellence of handicraft and last but not least the excitement is provided by the fact that costumers can design their own pieces. The synergy of these four characteristics create the so called ‘su misura’ – perfectly fitted – shirt according to the philosophy of tailoring.
