A true Budapest gem, the botanical gardens of Eötvös Loránd University (ELTE) lie in a lesser-explored area of District VIII. If you like your cacti, orchids and huge water lilies, this picturesque attraction is the place to be. The gardens date back to the 1700s, and in their heyday, they were home to more than 12,000 different species. To buy any plants or flowers, pop into the Fitoland shop just inside.
