Alongside the historic landmark of Matthias Church on Castle Hill, an underground tour organised by the Duna-Ipoly National Park takes visitors backwards chronologically through the cave labyrinth, showing the most well built parts of the complex first. You enter a house through a narrow alley where a path leads down into the depths of Castle Hill. The ground beneath the streets hides three levels of cellars, which continue into natural caves. This area was converted into a shelter which gave refuge to thousands of citizens during World War II, so its original, natural shapes are almost undetectable. Exploration of the cave reveals numerous unique sights, such as a bone chamber, wells that have been in place since the Middle Ages, the imprint of mammoth teeth, and entertaining stories and legends from the Turkish era.
Bring warm clothing as the temperature in the caves is around 12 degrees all year round.
