The weather may never be completely predictable, but as soon as warm rays of sunshine peek out from behind the gray layer of crabby clouds that sweep over Budapest, the beautiful beams entice everyone outside. Fortunately, Budapest boasts several cafés with cool outdoor terraces where we can enjoy tasty cupfuls of black java and a slice of cake (or more), whether it is by the intriguing edifice of the Hungarian Opera House, in a slightly secluded and atmospheric garden, or on a busy downtown promenade. Here are eight cool cafés that already await crowds with their cozy outdoor hangouts.

1/8

Asztalka

Asztalka is a reliably trustworthy choice when we crave sweets; here, we can devour a slice of cake washed down with some satisfying coffee while sitting outside on the atmospheric terrace overlooking Buda’s Tabán district, enjoying some sweet sunshine.

2/8

Café Flore Matin et Soir (Closed)

The city’s Buda side had long been lacking a hangout like Café Flore. At the most pleasant juncture of Hattyú Street, we can spend some time outside surrounded by all kinds of delicious French desserts, coffee, or even a glass of fine wine or champagne.

3/8

Czakó Kert

At this lovely garden that evokes the ambience of the Hungarian countryside, they not only hold weekly markets, but they also await everyone with delicious sweets at a cool spot that feels far removed from the hustle and bustle of downtown.

4/8

Édesmindegy

No matter what you choose at Édesmindegy, no mistakes can be made here. Our favorite is the peanut butter cheesecake called Fekete mamba, which is best devoured outside on the terrace that faces a lively Budapest street, Pozsonyi Road.

5/8

Fekete

As one of the pioneers of Budapest’s specialty-café scene, Fekete has a terrace on Múzeum Avenue filled with a truly special atmosphere. We really wouldn’t mind starting every morning here sipping on any one of their tasty coffee concoctions.

6/8

Kaffeine Espresso Bar - Nagymező utca (Closed)

Lövőház Street’s most popular café is not only famous for its black java served with milk, but also for the especially attentive staff. If you are ever nearby, do not miss out on having a cup of coffee at Kaffeine while people-watching in the shade.

7/8

Opera Café

Who wouldn’t love to have a coffee by the feet of the sphinx… in Budapest, by the Opera House. This place evokes the atmosphere of old times, both through its philosophy and impressive interior, but the terrace is especially striking for its Andrássy Avenue surroundings.

8/8

Törökméz

One of the Buda side’s friendliest breakfast places is definitely Törökméz, where we can enjoy Sunday brunches and chats over delicious cupfuls of coffee and/or slices of cake. We recommend choosing an egg-based breakfast, but they have more health-conscious options, too.
