Health-consciousness is on the rise in Budapest, with diet shops, intolerance-conscious cooking, paleo and ultra healthy delis and bistros sprouting like mushrooms after fresh spring rain. Like in other parts of the world, the number of juice bars has also skyrocketed. Wheatgrass might be the new coffee, chia seeds and spirulina are becoming widely available, and there's loads of hype around special plant milks. So we sampled plenty of juices, smoothies and shakes to find these 5 spots, which we highly recommend.

Juicy

We visited Dalma and Timi's juice bar in Dob Street soon after their July opening. Since then, Juicy has been discovered by a great number of Budapest's residents: the Instagram has been flooded with pics of the tasty juices, and the pressed drinks have become popular of the post-pub crawl crowd too, since they are perfect for curing hangover dehydration. The Milky product family has also hit the shelves: these are plant milk-based (almond milk, cashew milk, coconut milk and poppy seed milk) beverages with seasonal variations, like the currently popular gingerbread flavour. The fixed  menu is always accompanied by a few novelties, since the girls love to experiment with flavours and ingredients. In the summer months, the detox waters (spiced up with fruits) trend, while the cold season delivers magical immune boosting shots (created with garlic, ginger and oregano oil instead of antibiotics). Juicy home delivery is also up and running, so you can order together with your colleagues at the office, or surprise your loved ones with a bottle of health. Head in store early as that's when the range of juices is at its greatest.
Prices: 490 HUF - 1190 HUF
Our favourites: Green supreme (apple, spinach, cucumber, celery, ginger) and Top Gun (orange, grapefruit, lemon, ginger, cayenne)

TüTü

The playful name does not refer to the ballet skirt, but the way kids call drinks. TüTü is still considered a newborn in Újlipótváros. But the man behind this juice bar, Attila Nemesvölgyi, is no stranger to this business. He is responsible for Sarki Fűszeres, so there's no doubting the expertise behind the juice spot at 41 Pozsonyi Road. The target audience includes local health-maniac mums and their kids, people heading to work, and even the elderly heading out to Szent István park for walk. All ingredients are fresh and seasonal as the bar does not use frozen fruits and vegetables. You can pop in TüTü for a shot of energy, which is served - surprisingly - in a shot glass, but this one won't leave you with that scrunched up face that follows a last shot with friends at 4am. Instead this vitamin bomb has a marvellous taste. This place is eco-conscious: although they use paper cups for take-away, they try to use refill bottles. TüTü wants to help people replace creamy coffees with wheatgrass shots and cola with coconut milk-spinach-apple smoothies.

Prices: from 250 HUF / dl
Our favourites: Popeye shake (spinach, apple, banana, coconut milk) and Bíborka (beetroot, orange, apple)

The Juice Shop

The Juice Shop in Pannónia Street opened under the direction of a pair of truly pleasant siblings. The space is attractive, fresh and roomy, and the products hit the mark. A great advantage of the place is the uniform pricing of juices (990 HUF) and smoothies (1190 HUF). The drinks menu was compiled with the assistance of a dietician, so The Juice Shop has the answer if you want to start a juice fast or detox diet. Juices are cold pressed to eliminate any heat that would otherwise burn out important nutrients and vitamins - so each juice comes with 100% taste and nutrient content. The items on the drink card are all available spruced up with super-foods like hemp seed powder, chia seeds or chlorella.

Prices: 990 HUF
Our favourites: Egy Csepp Tavasz ('A drop of spring' with orange, carrot, apple, ginger, mint) and V mint vanília (V for Vanilla with banana, orange, vanilla almond milk)

Crazy Fruits

Crazy Fruits in Hollán Ernő Street is a cool spot dealing with raw food, healthy and light dishes, and desserts. Its clientèle includes those who follow a strict raw food diet as well as elderly people who wish to change their lifestyle. The place, of course, serves milkshakes and juices, too. Thanks to its great location, it is also frequented by those who go running on Margaret Island, since a wheatgrass juice or a classic milkshake provides the necessary energy after a run. They are open from 7am, so Crazy Fruits is jackpot for the early birds as well as those who want to pick up a dried fruit-based raw cookie or a glass of delicious juice on the way to work.

Prices: from 600 HUF
Our favourites: pineapple-ginger, green shake

Sóker Salt Caves & Relaxation Centre

Sóker is a salt therapy centre in Mozsár Street. It is known that salt has powerful physiological benefits: salt cave therapy can alleviate symptoms of asthma, allergies, and other ailments. Entering the shop, you are greeted by salt mist, which might be strange at first, but is easy to get used to. You can buy green smoothies by the counter on the upper storey, while the lower storey houses the massage rooms and communal spaces lined with salt bricks and crystals, and the kids' salt sandbox. The health-conscious attitude of the owners inspired the introduction of the extra healthy green smoothies, helping guests to reach an optimum vitamin intake. Their drinks are made of chlorophyll bombs like baby spinach, nettle, carrot greens or chard. Pineapple, apple, orange and cranberry are added to fine tune the flavours of the smoothies (which incidentally only include the highest quality ingredients), but they are also made with specialities like liquid muesli.

Prices: from 750 HUF
Our favourite: Zöld Gorilla ('Green gorilla') and Vita Green
