Organized by the
Museum of Fine Arts
and Musée National Picasso of Paris to honor the most influential artist of the 20th century,
Picasso – Transfigurations
, 1895-1972 opens on April 21st at the Hungarian National Gallery.
The
45 paintings
, several
drawings
, and
statues
comprise a collection of
about 100 works
, selected from different periods of Picasso’s career to demonstrate the evolution of techniques and tools used to depict the human body. Picasso’s experimenting nature goes beyond the traditional limits of “portraits” and “still lifes” and creates a new topic, the independent category of the “figure” formed by specific tools of art.

The exhibitions invites to a journey through Picasso’s typical method of work, with an emphasis on series, recurring motifs, and the special moment of breakthrough. The main topic is the shift in the painter’s approach towards the figural depiction in his more than 70-years-long life-work. Most of the artworks are from the collection of Musée National Picasso of Paris, but other museums from around the world will also provide pieces for the exhibition. The booklet of studies by outstanding French and Hungarian experts will provide different approaches on the methods Picasso used. The publication contains the whole collection on display, and also documents with Hungarian ties from the Parisian museum’s archives.
