Illustrated with art objects, the lecture will delve into the lives of two extraordinary women from the 19-20th century. Attendees can find out about the stories of Gizella Berzeviczy, the aristocratic-born teacher who played a major role in establishing teacher training for women, and Elza Turcsányi “Mágnás”, who after humble beginnings became the lady of the Kiscelli Castle.

Also including a guided tour, this lecture will explain through the permanent exhibition of the gallery the transformation of the roles of women as artists. From the beginnings in Hungary: from the Women’s Painting School led by Lajos Deák Ébner and the Society of Hungarian Female Fine Artists, through the profession of the fine and applied artist becoming a career in the 1910s and 1920s and the long period when gender as an issue was not discussed, all the way to the second millennium, which reinterpreted women in arts, among other aspects.
